In the U.S. today we celebrate the birthday of the great peace activist and spiritual leader Martin Luther King Jr. In Nina Simone’s song about Dr. King, she called him “The King of Love.” Today we stop and reflect on Dr. King, the great prophet of the 20th century who emerged as America’s conscience during times of great social turbulence. Like any good conscience, his exhortations were both inspiring and disquieting. His eloquent and passionate commitment to social and economic justice were probably unparalleled in the history of our country. We owe him a great debt.
